What are you addicted to?

Dear Diary,

What are you addicted to? What is giving you your high or your fix? So, my students recently conducted some research on the different types of substances and they presented their findings to the class. They were required to identify what the substance does to the brain and the human body; the implications for abusing the substances as well as the long-term effects. They presented on alcohol, tobacco, heroin, opioids, marijuana, just to name a few. All those substances have one thing in common - they give a certain high which keeps them going back for more. In an effort to get that same high, they continually take the substance and even begin increasing the dosage.

Now, imagine if we were to get that high on God. I would like you to take a moment and visualize it...Okay, you get the point - so, let us move right along. I remember feeling that “high” when I got saved. I was on top of the world - I was floating. I was spending quality time in the word, I was praying, in short, I was trying my best to grow in the spiritual disciplines. That high was a high like no other. Then, low and behold, for a while I began having a lukewarm relationship with my faith and relationship with the Lord. I was no longer spending time with the Lord, I was no longer getting that high from Him because I was straying. Instead, I sought to get that high from relationships, jobs, money, material things, etc. What I did not realize then was that there is nothing in the world that can satisfy me the way the Lord can. Thank goodness I realized before it was too late.

Long after the presentations, I found myself thinking about the addicts and their cravings. Whenever they are addicted to particular substances, they may sometimes do just about anything to get that substance. They simply feel as if they cannot live without it and they sometimes feel as if their lives are worth nothing without it. Even with all the long-term effects on their bodies and their families, they simply just want more of it. And -  they do often get more. Now, think about this, what if we craved God the same way addicts crave drugs? What if we craved God the way pregnant women crave food? What if…?

Love,

Christian Girl
